Usage and Distribution#
The data and imagery available on the CSPP GeoSphere website are intended for research, educational, informational, and news media purposes. Users are welcome to use the imagery in news articles, reports, scientific papers, and presentations, provided that proper attribution is given to “University of Wisconsin-Madison / SSEC”. However, automated scraping or bulk downloading of image tiles is strictly prohibited.
Data#
Data is acquired in real-time from the GOES-East and GOES-West satellites on antennas located at the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), on the campus of the University of Wisconsin – Madison. The satellites are operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Software#
Imagery and retrieved geophysical products are generated using software that was developed under the Community Satellite Processing Package for Geostationary Data (CSPP Geo) project. All CSPP Geo software runs on Linux and is available free of charge after a one-time registration.
The GRB software package is used to process the raw satellite data streams.
The AIT Framework software package is used to calculate all ABI Level 2 products. The AIT Framework uses science algorithms that were developed by NOAA to generate a variety of higher-level retrieved geophysical products from satellite data.
The Geo2Grid software package is used to generate imagery in GeoTiff format. Geo2Grid software can be used to generate a variety of single band and RGB images and animations from geostationary satellite data.
The AIT Framework and Geo2Grid software packages are capable of processing geostationary satellite data obtained from a variety of sources, as long as the data is in mission standard format. Refer to the software documentation for more information on supported satellites and formats.
Funding#
The GeoSphere website was developed by the Space Science and Engineering Center, and is now funded by NOAA. The CSPP Geo project is also funded by NOAA.
